Case Study Gary Price, president of Corner Bakery, how are you today? I took over as president in October 2012 and it’s been a real exciting ride since taking over. We have just had phenomenal growth, our plan has been to double the size of the company over the next 3 to 4 years. Next year we’re going to open 40 franchise restaurants in 10 companies. 50 new Corner Bakeries hitting the ground in 2015.

We’ve got about 4500 associates in our enterprise, team members, we call them “breadheads” that run our units and really are the face of what Corner Bakery is to our ultimate guest. They’re the ones that make the magic happen every day.

Our key differentiator in this space is the quality of products that we offer. In managing that workforce is a challenge. A restaurant really is a just in time manufacturing enterprise. Our two biggest costs are food and labor. In the restaurant business, that represents about 60% of our P & L and that’s really where our partnership with Altametrics and e-restaurant restaurant software came in. That’s helping us to efficiently manage that workforce. The key in the restaurant business as you know is to make sure to have the right amount of people at the right time when the business is there and don’t have too much when the business isn’t there and that’s really what the restaurant software helps us do.

I’m a firm believer that technology in today’s society is an enterprise enabler. It helps our employees to be very efficient in their job. They also have lives and families. They want to work hard and provide great customer service when the business is there, but our employees don’t want to stand around and not have anything to do when there’s no business either. It certainly helps us as an enterprise model to be more efficient with our labor and it helps our customers to make sure that we’re properly staffed and ready to have a great customer experience when they walk in the front door. I’ve never had a project run this flawlessly and found a partner that could integrate and be able to configure their restaurant software to our business process and be ready to roll as quickly as this. It’s been a pleasure to work with the team at Altametrics and we’ve just had great success with it so far.

So I’ve dealt with a lot of different restaurant software, particularly out of the box and the end solutions in my career. The Altametrics enterprise restaurant software you could see it was developed with operations in mind so they can spend their time doing what they do best. Spending it with our customers out on the floor and our team members and our bread heads and helping them to do their job better. That feedback has been outstanding and our employees really like it. When we implemented the restaurant software e-smart clock that’s tied to e-restaurant. It’s very easy for the employees to clock in and clock out. It’s got biometrics on it. They just go up and put their thumbprint on it. It eliminates what we call buddy punching in the restaurant business. If they want to change their schedule. The schedule can be changed and then it can be texted to their mobile phones. With today’s millenials, that ability to utilize triggers and to send their schedule to them by email or text is a big big win for them.

Again, I can’t recommend this high enough. Whether you are a 2 or 3 unit enterprise or a 1500 unit chain. Take a hard look at this because it has been a restaurant software that has been easy to configure, easy to implement and very highly adopted by our operations team. We’re gonna provide a much better and enhanced guest experience for what really matters, our customers that come in everyday into our restaurants. That’s really what this is all about. This is a guest experience project and I think we’re gonna see dividends from this for years and years to come that enhance guest satisfaction.

With a company like us that’s rapidly evolving, there’s always a million and one things going on and it’s kind of hard to stay focused on your time keeping. You can spend all the time in the world creating the perfect schedule, anticipating your needs, forecasting the correct budget and scheduling appropriately, but life happens. People call in sick, people don’t show up, people hit traffic. Zip clock helps us manage life’s little mishaps.

It notifies us in real time, when employees are late, when employees aren’t showing up for their shifts. Sometimes in a busy restaurant you have a million and one things going on at the same time. It’s hard to keep track of who needs to take a break, who needs to clock out, who’s coming in, and who didn’t show up for their shift. Altametrics enterprise makes it really easy to manage.

The restaurant mobile app is really convenient. With a company that’s always growing it can be sometimes hard to manage labor on a bigger scale. You have multiple units and it’s hard to check in and make sure everything is going the way it’s suppose to be. You can even be stuck in traffic and monitor all that. You can be at one location and still be keeping tabs on all the other locations really easily. It’s a super user friendly restaurant software and you just check it out and make sure that all the stores are doing well.

Altametrics enterprise even offers reporting, which is extremely helpful. They have both a payroll report, which you can just export and take care of your payroll needs. As well as a performance report. You select a time frame and it gathers information for all of your employees. It lets you know the hours worked based off the scheduled hours. It lets you know if they have any overtime, if they’re approaching overtime. If they’ve been taking their breaks, if they’ve been late, how often they’re on time. If they or any of their employees have violated any labor laws.

Here at Fresh Griller, we use zip clock on a tablet mounted on a wall. With the attached biometric reader, clocking in is super fast and simple. The employee simply scans their thumbprint and they’re clocked in. This eliminates any possibility of buddy-punching. So we know all the employees clocked in are actually working. It makes clocking in a lot faster, so there’s no more minute here or minute there before or after. It’s just a lot easier to clock in.

I would recommend Altametrics enterprise because not only does it help hold my team members accountable for their schedule, but it also proactively warns you if someone is about to violate a break. If someone is going to show up late to their shift or if any of the labor laws are going to be violated.
